Already August, where does the time fly?
The temperatures are soaring up to 29 degrees plus most days. It is impossible to walk on the sand without flip flops! The boat trips, BBQ’s on the beach, Banana boats and all the ‘heart in your mouth’ excitement of the sea are out in force. If you walk along the beach near the lift there are some nice promenades with seats where you can watch the activity. A nice breeze wafts off the Atlantic making the heat bearable. It is essential to put the sun cream, hat and cover those shoulders to prevent sunburn! Be afraid!
Albufeira had a week of craft stalls last week and open air music near Fishermans Beach. It was nice to see the Portuguese families dancing and partying in the square until the early hours.
I wandered down and picked up a few trinkets to take home to our four lovely daughters. Rosie and Lacey are here at the Irish pub to help their dad, Frank, in August for a week, as I visit my mum and brother and nephew. We are off to ‘bracing Skegness” at Butlins. A welcome break and Joe, my nephew who is now seven, loves it!
There are lots of things to look forward to in Albufeira and the nearby towns. Silves hosts a medieval fair 2nd August. Worth taking a bus or visit one of the ticket shops to find out more details.
Towards the end of August, look out for the gastronomic fair which will amaze your taste buds! Roast pig, almonds, olives, pastries and sweets abound and the Portuguese line up on benches with all the family to sample the feast.
Frank is looking forward to some of our return customers enjoying the balmy nights and pleasant sunshine. We are often asked about September holidays and readily say that it is one of the nicest times in the season. The weather is pleasant, our entertainer is still playing live music and customers are in less of a hurry and chat so it gives us time to get to know you in The Shamrock Irish Bar.
Weddings parties and the hen and stag parties are popular in September. Dont forget to let Frank know if you are planning to come over and enjoy our live music for a brilliant night out. You can email and contact us via the web site www.shamrock-irishbar.com
Many of you keep in touch with our Facebook page and leave us amazing Trip Advisor reviews. This year Trip Advisor awarded The Shamrock Irish Bar 5 stars Certificate of Excellence. Please continue to leave a review on Trip Advisor if you have enjoyed our company! We certainly enjoy yours.
As I return to UK I will leave you with this traditional Irish Blessing
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
Thanks a million
…summertime and the living is easy, so goes the song by George Gershwin. The heat hit Albufeira unusually late but the holidaymakers arrived, filling the pretty cobbled streets in the ‘Old Town’. Restaurants, bars, and gift shops are all busy and the square takes on a different guise at night with puppeteers, balloon modellers and live traditional music and dancing. As you all know, our resident musician plays live music seven nights throughout the season. His new CD, ‘One for the Road’ has Wagon Wheel, Bad Moon Rising and the traditional well loved Irish ballads that we sing along to at The Shamrock Irish Bar. Our customers continue to surprise us with their talents! You only need to look at the photos on our Shamrock Bar Facebook page to see the craic! We have a variety of instruments including a Banjo, Accordian, Fiddle, Tin Whistles and Franks favourite, the Bodhran.
The staff all have new t-shirts and so can be easily recognised in the bar. However, if you want to buy one as a souvenir of your holiday then just ask Frank.
Our daughters are frequent visitors and this year surprised Frank to celebrate his 60th birthday. We all wished him a happy birthday and recorded it on video firmly embedded on the Shamrock Facebook page. Have a peek at this ‘for one night only’ party!
Trip advisor helps new holidaymakers find their way to The Shamrock and we are proudly displaying our 5 star certificate of excellence for 2013. Frank loves the bar and welcomes everyone who steps over our threshold. Good value drinks, brilliant entertainment and our cheerful helpful staff, Chris from Dublin, Chicco and Ricardo (both from Cork, a little joke that Frank has with them) and our amazingly talented, happy, drinking revellers, you the customers have got us this accolade. Thanks a million.
….where did May go to? The Shamrock Bar has had a busy month with customers taking full advantage of the good value holidays and flights. Although the weather was mixed and often very cool at night holiday makers flocked to Albufeira, escaping the long hard Irish winter.
The flowers are wakening in local gardens and our own patio pots of geraniums and palm trees thirstily drink the water against the heat of the sun. Most days the temperatures are reaching the early 20′s and its nice to relax under the shade of the parasol. The local cats languish, paws outstretched in the heat.
Local bars have put their new cushions on outside chairs…along with blankets for the cool evenings!
Touts and waitresses take up work all waiting for the summer season to start.
Meals are good value during the lunchtime until about 3pm. Look for ‘the dish of the day’-'Prato do dia’. Often the tourist menu includes your starter, main meal, dessert and a drink. Sometimes you will be presented on the table or the waiter will bring bread, sardine pâté butter and olives. I love this appetiser but it is worth reminding you that this little treat can add considerably to your bill. It is ok to simply tell them that you don’t want these and they will not charge.
The boat trips sail daily and paint a pretty picture as they glide across the bay. Most of the trips can be booked through ticket offices. There are trips to the caves, fishing trips and just boats which show you the coastline.
Nightlife is busy in the main square in the ‘old town’. The puppeteer entertains mums, dads and the children! Balloons and rockets fly into the sky enticing a few euros from the tourists pockets.
Music is loud and clear in the square and then….our little haven, upstairs above the noise of the ‘bar street’ provides a little bit of home. We have music and singing and dancing in the familiar way that only the Irish know how to do! We chat and get to know the people on the next table. Then, over a Magners and a Guinness, we discover our neighbours have signed the map on the wall of the best Irish bar!
This month (June) we received a certificate from Trip Advisor. We will proudly display this in the bar knowing that the customers have kindly appreciated us and we them.
Ireland are in the World Cup qualifier this weekend 7th June and not forgetting Lions in the Rugby. Good Luck!
…The economy and the weather seem to be the main topics of conversation – even here in Albufeira! When Vicky arrived in February she quickly wrapped up in her winter scarf and boots – defence against the bitter wind! Now the chill is lifting and the sunny days mean coffee by the harbour. Be sure to try the Tarte Amendoa or very sweet bola regional, pure sugar! The main square has new shops and stalls selling the trinkets and souvenirs that we all love to take home. Many of them are only just opening during April and May but the markets are open for business.
The little tourist train (comboio turistico), is trundling round and is good value and very handy for the supermarket. In the old town you can catch it at the top of the escalator. Don’t forget to visit the ticket shops for good value tours and the open topped tourist bus providing a hop on off service. Frank is a good source of local information and has some favourite restaurants which he will share with you.
St Patricks day has been and gone! Damien rocked the crowds and some of the locals joined in the craic! Our entertainment is back in full swing towards the end of April. A new tin whistle is waiting for any players and all singers are welcome! Frank has practised the Bodhran through the winter and so is ready to ‘beat the drum loudly’.
Coming our way soon…11th – 14th April, 2013, is Rally Portugal. Frank would like to be watching this and just in case …here are the details; http://www.rallydeportugal.pt/
25th April is a commemorative day taking place in Albufeira and Guia so keep an eye out for this event.
Guinness is a main staple in The Shamrock and they are currently offering to pay someone to drink their brew! The company are offering flexible hours, a mobile phone and a trip to Dublin! You must be able to drink responsibly! Visit Guinness Portugal on facebook. While you are there just hop over to The Shamrock Facebook site and check our new photos.
This morning Vicky looked along our very pretty cobbled street in the heart of Albufeira and spotted a Stork circling round the old brick chimney. I wonder if he will build a nest this year?
Call in and visit us soon
Frank and Vicky
St Patrick's Party
As I am writing this on 1st March then I would like to wish all our Welsh holidaymakers a Happy St Davids day! Hope the daffodils are blooming and you are proudly wearing them today.
The Irish will soon be proudly displaying their own Irish pride with Shamrock in lapels and lots of party spirit. That spirit must include the Jameson, Tullimore and why not the Baileys, Magners and not forgetting Guinness! The party couldn’t start without them….and we are inviting you to our own St Patrick’s party at The Shamrock Irish Bar, Old Town, Albufeira, Algarve Portugal….where else would you like to be but here!
Our Headliner…Damien is back, flying in from Trim, Ireland – playing the best music and song with the finest singers and dancers. We know you can!
Frank will host the most amazing, not to be missed St Patrick’s Party so come and join us because it wouldn’t be the same without you!
Our days at The Shamrock are busy with sport. The Olympics have proved successful for both Ireland and Yorkshire, God’s own country! As I write this blog Ireland is cheering Katie for the fight tonight, 9th August 2012; lets hope this optimism is realised and turns to gold. Good luck Katie!
The GAA matches continue to be viewed on our two 50 inch screens and supporters, in their jerseys, pack our Irish bar most weekends.
Albufeira has a party feel each night throughout August with festivals and Fado in the local restaurants and the influx of Portuguese taking their annual holiday. The beaches are covered in tanned bodies enjoying the heat of the day and just to remind you that if you are descended from the fair race of Ireland don’t forget to cover up by slapping on the high factor sun cream and slopping on your hat and t-shirts – essential items for your holiday bag.
On the beach the lifeguards sport pecs and surfboards, patrolling the beach making sure everyone is safe. Water sports include jet-ski, para-glyding and the boat trip to see the Dolphins or just enjoy the beautiful coast line and maybe a barbeque. The little train will take you a nice round trip or hop on and hop off as you please to shop at Continente or the beach or if you are lucky to be on the route, even back to your hotel!
After such a busy day we welcome you in at The Shamrock Irish Bar for live music to relax and chat and sing along too. Damien Reilly, infamous for being ‘The Naked Culchie’ is our resident entertainer. He will play ballads or the more rousing Tommy K! Damien has an amazing repertoire and willingly plays requests: how many times does he play Galway Girl? Frank accompanies many songs with his Bodhran and his signature tune is Spancil Hill. Keep an eye on our Shamrock Irish Bar facebook page for pictures of our nightly music sessions. The happy smiley faces tell the story of the craic that everyone comes along to enjoy.
The weather in Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland has led to many people exclaiming ‘get me out of here’! The rain just kept on falling so the wall to wall sunshine here in Algarve, Portugal was very attractive and affordable. In Albufeira the choice of restaurants is varied and a typical dish of the day will cost @ 9 euros which includes your soup, main dish, and pudding! Our drink prices continue to be best value especially soft drinks which are only 1.50 euros per can. School holidays will be nearing the end so enjoy the hot Fishermans Beach and then the cool air-conditioned bar upstairs at The Shamrock.
Looking forward to seeing you at The Shamrock for ‘the craic’!
The heat is on as we are almost hitting July….summer breezes waft pleasant fragrances waving the colourful summer clothes in the tempting shops and stalls. Shop until you drop in Albufeira – or at least until midinght! The California shopping centre has a variety of shops including the baby wear shop, large clothing stores, and hairdressers and manicure salons among others. Families find our airy bar a nice resting place and we have small toys and games to amuse the family in our friendly bar. Having four daughters (all grown up now, I am glad to say!) means that we can just about remember how easy holidays are if the kids are happy. Our big screen tv’s let dad watch the sport while mum can enjoy the day time calm while the kids are amused – or maybe leave dad in charge while mum goes shopping!
Flags were flying during Euro 2012 and we all cheered Ireland along and are now hoping that Portugal stake their claim in the football jamboree. Wimbledon is managing to avoid the rainy weather and it will soon be The 2012 Olympics. I will be glued to the tv for the sailing Olympics in Weymouth and Portland, Dorset as this is our home. The bar still entertains nightly with our talented musicians and Thursday quiz night and live music. Food has taken a back seat during the summer months but we will bring back our tasty snack menu in the Autumn when we are quieter. As you realise we have long days and nights working in the bar so to ensure that we offer the best service to our holidaymakers during the day-time we, (Frank and Vicky) take a break four days of the week. Come along and meet Chris, our bar man from Dublin, (no, we don’t fly him in specially!) – he lives here! He has a great line in banter!
Our Trip advisor reviews continue to amaze us and so thank you to everyone for your continuing support and making The Shamrock Irish Bar so much fun:)
Happy holidays in The Algarve.
Here in The Shamrock Irish Bar we are ready for Euro 2012. Irelands first match versus Croatia plays June 10th. Get your seats early as the bar was packed for the friendly match played against Hungary. Our two 50 inch screens and comfortable air conditioning, not forgetting our good supply of draught Guinness, Heineken and Sagres all kick off the party!
GAA & championship games are shown in The Irish Bar. We also show all major sporting events including Wimbledon, Golf tournaments, Boxing, Darts and the forthcoming Olympics 2012. Our current homestead in Weymouth is hosting the Sailing Olympics at Portland in Dorset and I am sure that Vicky will be watching this and hoping to see friends that we know from this area.
Come and roar for Ireland in the Euro 2012 at probably the best Irish Bar in ‘old town’Albufeira!
After many an April shower, the temperature has sprung to 30 degrees today, Wednesday 9th May 2012. The beach is beckoning and everyone seeks out the cool of the Irish Bar, The Shamrock! Where else would you want to be? The bar is air conditioned and best of all has cool draught Guinness at only 4 euros a pint and local beer, Sagres at 1.50 euros for half a pint and bargain 2.50 euros for a pint. No need for happy hour prices here – fantastic prices and good value throughout the year. If you need to check out our prices before you arrive take a closer look at our website: Trip Advisor is another good source of info and currently we are rated ninth of sixteen venues worthy of a visit. The Algarve nightlife is constant and a relaxed haven offered both day and night are right here. In the daytime the bar is the perfect place to chat and get to know other people. During the evening our talented musicians sing and entertain you and if you want to clear those lungs and take the floor or belt out a tune then don’t be shy! Last week we had a lovely group of Irish girls celebrating a hen night. They were talented and played the tin whistle and treated us to some Irish dancing too. Everyone loved their ‘tutus’ and ‘deelie boppers’! They assured us that they will be back next year! I’ll look forward to that and thank you girls for joining our facebook friends, ‘Shamrock Irish Bar, Albufeira’.
The entertainment in the Shamrock Irish pub is revving up. We have excellent musicians to entertain you and make the bar rock! The weekly quiz starts the week, every Monday and again on Thursday. The loser prize is becoming coveted just like the Blankety Blank cheque book and pen! Luke can really make his guitar sing and has a keen following of fans. Michael has a brilliant session and most nights someone from the crowd will sing a well known Irish ballad. Also we are introducing a new musician infamous in Dublin - Damion Riley. Find him on You Tube. He starts his season on Saturday 28th April. Make sure you keep this date if you are visiting old town Albufeira, The Shamrock Irish Bar, on the famous ‘bar street’, Old town, Albufeira.
